EUDI Wallet to be launched in early 2027

By early 2027, the European Union will introduce a unified digital wallet that will work across borders in all member states. The basis for this is the eIDAS2.0 Regulation and the EUDI Wallet Framework. With the EUDI Wallet, citizens will be able to identify themselves digitally free of charge, register online, sign contracts electronically in the future and securely share verified evidence such as digitally certified qualifications.

From 2027, administrations and regulated industries such as banks and telecommunications providers will have to accept the wallet for identification.

Deutsche Post will integrate the EUDI Wallet into the Postident portfolio early in mid-2026 as a further digital identification process

The aim is to enable customers to easily and efficiently meet regulatory requirements via a central and established interface.

Deutsche Post has been one of the first pilot users of the SPRIND Wallet-Sandbox since December 2025 to test use cases for the emerging EUDI ecosystem. In addition to identification via EUDI Wallet (PID), further innovative services are being developed as part of POSTIDENT.

As Deutsche Post, we actively support the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the digital association Bitkom and the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization (BMDS) to establish a powerful EUDI ecosystem in Germany. Through this participation, we contribute to the simplification and acceleration of digital processes and services and promote the broad, practical implementation of the European digital identity.

Questions and answers about POSTIDENT by EUDI Wallet

eIDAS 2.0 - Amendment of Regulation (EU) No. 910/2014, the Implementing Acts of the EU Commission and the European Digital Identity Wallet Architecture and Reference Framework (ARF)

Initially, activation can only take place via the online ID function (eID) of the German ID card, the electronic residence permit (eAT) and the eID card for EU citizens with the associated personal PIN. As part of the activation, data is securely transferred from the eID chip to the locally installed EUDI Wallet app on the customer's smartphone and secured with its own EUDI Wallet PIN.

When using the online ID function (eID), the physical ID must be held up to the smartphone in order to read the eID chip via the NFC function.  When using the EUDI Wallet, this error-prone step is omitted and I can prove my identity without a physical identification document.

As an existing client, it is possible to easily activate the EUDI Wallet procedure in the Postident Portal. In addition to the previously selected methods, their end customers will also be offered identification via EUDI Wallet. The result data is transmitted securely via the established interface.

Yes. Just like the other identification procedures, identification via EUDI Wallet is available as a module in the Postident SDK.
