Since January 1, 2005, those without children who are covered by compulsory statutory long-term care insurance pay a surcharge on the regular premium. Excluded from the surcharge are those without children who were born prior to January 1, 1940, irrespective of whether they actually have or ever had children.
As of January 1, 2022, the surcharge will increase by 0.1 percentage points, from 0.25% to 0.35%. The regular premium will remain at 3.05%. The new statutory long-term care contribution for those without children thus amounts to 3.4% as of January 1, 2022.
Those affected by this increase can see their adjusted premium for the first time in their account statement for January 2022. In certain cases, the responsible insurance provider issues a corresponding notification.
If you are entitled to pension payments from a German pension or accident insurance provider and live abroad, you will receive a letter in June/July
containing your pension adjustment notification for 2022 as well as a personalized version of the certificate of life form.

“West” pensions were not adjusted in 2021. If you receive a “West” pension from statutory pension insurance, you did not receive an adjustment notification in June or July 2021.
The “East” pensions increased by 0.72% as of July 1, 2021, as part of the initiative to gradually adjust “East” pensions to match “West” pensions. If you receive an “East” pension from statutory pension insurance, you received an adjustment notification in June or July 2021.
Everything you need to know about your pension adjustment notification can be found in our FAQs.
Your entitlement to a basic bank account means it will no longer be necessary to pay out statutory pensions in cash. Financial institutions will assist you in setting up a basic bank account.

The cost deduction for your pension payment at the end of December 2021 will take effect for the first time as of December 1, 2021.
The German Basic Pension Act entered into force on January 1, 2021. The basic pension is not a separate payment. It is paid out as a supplement to your state pension. The Federal Ministry of Labour expects around 1.3 million pensioners from a total of around 21 million will receive the supplementary basic pension.
Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German statutory pension insurance fund) checks whether the conditions for the basic pension supplement have been met for each pension recipient on a case-by-case basis. Please note: You do not need to do anything. There is no need to submit an application.
Since mid-July 2021, Deutsche Rentenversicherung has been automatically checking all new pension applications (new pensions) for entitlement to basic pension supplements.
In addition, until December 2021, both the entitlement check for pensioners receiving social security benefits such as a housing allowance or basic benefits for old age and reduced earning capacity, and the check for existing pensions with pension eligibility pre-1992 were carried out.
Effective February 2022, Deutsche Rentenversicherung will begin reviewing existing pensions with a pension start date of 1992 or later. This process should be completed by December 2022.
If you meet the conditions for the basic pension supplement, you will be notified to this effect by your pension insurance provider and informed of the level of supplement you are eligible for. In the event this process reveals no entitlement to the basic pension supplement, no notification will be sent.
In all cases, the basic pension will be paid out retroactively. This means: In the event you do not receive notification until December 2022, you will receive all of your payments for the period since January 2021 in one single payment.
Deutsche Rentenversicherung is offering a hotline for questions relating to the new basic pension. If you have any questions about the basic pension, contact the free hotline 0800 1000 4800, Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays until 3:30 p.m.
