Questions and answers regarding the 2023 life certificate

Here you will find the answers to frequently asked questions regarding the life certificate.

If you are entitled to German pension payments from a statutory pension or accident insurance provider and have supplementary pension benefits (Zusatzversorgung), you are asked once a year, under certain conditions, to present proof of life to confirm that you continue to meet the requirements to receive payments.

For this purpose, you will receive the life certificate form by mail along with your pension adjustment notification in June or July. You must sign the life certificate form, take it to be certified by an approved institution, and return the original by mail to Renten Service by mid-August. Please use the pre-printed return envelope.

The life certificate form consists of two parts:

  • Part A contains your personal data. If this data is no longer accurate, you can inform us of any changes in the appropriate space.
  • Part B contains the required certification by an approved institution. This serves as proof that you fulfill the requirement for continuing to receive your German pension.

If you reside in one of the countries listed below, you will not be requested to provide a certificate of life every year: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Therefore, if you have received a pension adjustment notification but no life certificate form, you do not need to take any further action this year.

Deutsche Post AG’s Renten Service regularly checks on behalf of your insurance provider that pension beneficiaries residing abroad continue to meet the requirements to receive payments (in accordance with section 119 of Book 6 of the German Social Security Code - SGB VI).

You must sign the life certificate form, take it to be certified by an approved institution, and return the original by mail to Renten Service by mid-August.

If Renten Service does not receive your life certificate on time in August, we will send you a friendly reminder in September.

If you do not respond to the reminder by mid-October, your pension payments will be suspended as of November 30. Pension payments will not resume until you submit a certificate of life.

If you submit your certificate of life to us in a timely fashion shortly thereafter, your payments can be quickly resumed. You will also be reimbursed for all payments that you missed.

Renten Service will otherwise return the payment order for your pension to your insurance provider. Should resumption of payment be necessary after that, you must contact your insurance provider. The address of your pension insurance provider can be found on your pension notice or your pension adjustment notification.

  1. If you, as the pension recipient, are unable to write and thus cannot complete the life certificate yourself, you must submit a certificate confirming this along with the life certificate.
  2. If you, as the pension recipient, are unable to complete the life certificate yourself for health reasons, the name of the person who has spoken to the official body must be entered in Part B. In this case, you must submit corresponding proof (such as a medical certificate) along with the life certificate.

Please notify Renten Service of the date of death as soon as possible. If possible, please use the Pension Service's change notification form.
