The solution for parcels, letters, promotional mail items and Pressepost

More and more senders are using GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL to reduce the CO2e-emissions associated with their shipping. Through decarbonization measures within the Deutsche Post and DHL logistics network, GoGreen Plus* reduces CO2e emissions** within Germany by approximately 95%. GoGreen Plus* is already automatically included in many parcel and mail products or can be contracted as an additional service.

Your benefits at a glance

  • GoGreen Plus* reduces CO2e emissions directly within Deutsche Post and DHL's domestic logistics network - no offsetting afterwards, but verifiable reduction.

  • The CO2e emissions related to your order are reduced by around 95% compared to standard shipping within Germany - a measurable impact for the environment.

  • The emission reduction is calculated in line with recognized international standards and verified by an independent external auditor (SGS SA).

  • Thanks to the Book & Claim approach, GoGreen Plus* enables you to benefit from verified CO2e reductions. The method separates the booking of emission reductions from the specific physical shipment: the achieved CO2e reduction is allocated to you on an accounting basis, regardless of the location where the insetting measure was actually implemented.

  • If you use GoGreen Plus*, you may inform recipients on the relevant shipments by including the statement: "We ship using the sustainability program of Deutsche Post / DHL. Information: www.GoGreenPlus.de."

  • GoGreen Plus* can be used with many Deutsche Post and DHL products for both mail and parcel.

    • For private customers, GoGreen Plus* has been included at no additional charge since September 2026.

    • For mail, GoGreen Plus* is already included in the scope of service, particularly for all partial-service letter mailings (Teilleistungssendungen Brief), domestic registered mail, hybrid letters via E-POST access products, and addressed promotional mail items.

How the GoGreen Plus* service works, using an online order as an example

Order

This online shop uses GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL to reduce CO2e emissions associated with shipping. That way, you minimize the environmental impact of your delivery.

Shipping

Climate protection starts with online shopping. Your order is shipped using GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL, which can be identified in the shipment tracking and on the shipping label.

CO2e reduction

Deutsche Post and DHL invest in additional CO2e reduction measures within their logistics network in Germany.

Examples include alternative technologies such as electric vehicles, alternative fuels such as biogas (CNG/LNG) for transportation, and heat pumps in buildings. This approach is known as insetting.

Book & Claim

The measurable reduction in CO2e emissions is proportionally allocated to your shipment. This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported using vehicles or facilities that employ these fuels or technologies.

Transparency and Trust

  • GoGreen Plus* helps companies achieve their climate goals: The Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2.0, published by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in June 2026, recognizes Book & Claim as a credible mechanism for reducing transport emissions. GoGreen Plus* aligns with the principles described in the updated standard and enables customers to address CO2e reductions within shared transport networks. Where direct, technically feasible measures have been exhausted, GoGreen Plus* can therefore help business customers address their Scope 3 transport emissions and make progress towards their SBTi targets.

  • Insetting is based on the prevailing international standard (guidelines of the Smart Freight Centre Framework).

  • An independent, external auditing company (SGS SA) annually reviews the calculation of CO2e data as well as the CO2e reduction achieved through GoGreen Plus*.

  • Business customers that use GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL receive proof of verified emission reduction in the form of customer certificates. To ensure efficiency and economic viability, product-specific minimum volumes may apply.

GoGreen Plus: What measures are we taking to decarbonize?

With GoGreen Plus*, we are making targeted investments in alternative fuels and the infrastructure this transition requires. All of which enables us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions directly within our transport and logistics network.

Biogas trucks (Bio-CNG)

When it comes to pickup and main carriage operations, we use biogas (bio compressed natural gas) as a sustainable alternative to diesel. To support this transition, we are introducing CNG trucks to replace diesel vehicles. To ensure reliable fueling - despite the limited public CNG refueling network - we are also establishing our own gas filling stations.

Bio-liquefied natural gas trucks (Bio-LNG)

For long-distance main carriage routes, particularly between sorting centers, we use bio LNG as a more sustainable alternative to diesel-powered trucks.

Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO100) as a diesel alternative

We use HVO100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil), as a synthetic diesel substitute produced from waste and residual materials such as used cooking oil.

A key advantage is that existing diesel trucks can often be converted to HVO100 with minimal modifications.

Electric trucks powered by renewable energy

We procure electric trucks as a direct replacement for diesel trucks. They are charged with green electricity. To enable efficient operations, we are also expanding the necessary charging infrastructure at our sites.

Electric delivery vehicles powered by renewable energy

Our electric-drive delivery vehicles are charged at delivery depots using renewable electricity. As a result, delivery operations are free from greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e free), unlike diesel-powered delivery vehicles.

Biogas injection into the German natural gas grid (certificates)

We purchase biogas certificates which equate to injecting a defined volume of biogas into the German natural gas grid. Because biogas has a significantly lower carbon intensity than fossil natural gas, this volume is used - as part of a mass balance approach - to replace the energy source used for gas heating in our sorting centers.

Heat pumps in our new delivery buildings

We are equipping our newly built delivery facilities with air-source heat pumps to replace fossil fuels traditionally used for heating. Because these heat pumps are powered by renewable electricity, they enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based heating systems.

Renewable electricity for building operations

Approximately 95% of our electricity consumption is already covered by renewable energy - through power purchase agreements and certificates. This renewable energy powers our electric vehicles, heat pumps and other building operations.

To implement these measures within the GoGreen Plus* service, we follow the framework of the Smart Freight Centre, known as the Mass Balance Methodology (MBM Framework). Based on this framework, the following percentage distribution applied in 2025 to the CO2e emission reductions achieved by the measures used for insetting and GoGreen Plus*:

Prozentuale Verteilung der reduzierten CO2e Emissionen im Jahr 2025. E-Fahrzeuge (LKWs und Zustellfahrzeuge) 56%; CNG-LKWs 19%; Ökostrom für Gebäude 10%; LNG LKWs 8%; HVO-LKWs 5%; Biogas-Zertifikate für deutsches Erdgasnetz 1%; Wärmepumpen an Zustellstützpunkten 1%.

The calculation methodology for all measures relevant to insetting has been reviewed and verified by the external auditor SGS SA.

Conclusion: Sustainable shipping the easy way

By choosing GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL, you make a real contribution to environmental protection in Germany. Every parcel, letter, promotional mail item or Pressepost shipped with GoGreen Plus* reduces CO2e emissions by around 95% - thanks to direct investments in low-emission technologies and processes within Deutsche Post and DHL's German logistics network.

**CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalents) is a standard unit used to express the combined climate impact of different greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases.
