By choosing GoGreen Plus* services from Deutsche Post and DHL, more and more online shops are offering customers a shipping option with reduced CO2e emissions. For orders with GoGreen Plus* significantly reduced CO2e emissions occur. This contributes to environmental responsibility in Germany.

Your benefits at a glance

For a more detailed service description, see below.

  • Real CO2e reduction that works: GoGreen Plus* reduces CO2e emissions directly within Deutsche Post and DHL's domestic logistics network - no offsetting afterwards, but real reduction.

  • Reduction of CO2e emissions by up to 95% in shipping: The CO2e emissions related to your order are reduced by up to 95% - a measurable impact for the environment.

  • External auditing and verification: The emission reduction is calculated in line with recognized international standards and verified by an independent external auditor

  • Good for Germany, good for the environment:  Emissions in the logistics network of Deutsche Post and DHL are significantly reduced directly in Germany

How the GoGreen Plus* service works

SUSTAINABLE SERVICE

Your shop uses GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL to reduce shipping-related CO2e emissions.  This means your order not only arrives safely, but also  with reduced CO2e emissions compared to standard delivery.

ORDER

Climate protection starts with online shopping

Your order is placed with GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL - the service is then displayed in shipment tracking as well as on the shipping label.

SHIPPING

CO2e emissions are reduced

In line with the order placed by the online shop, Deutsche Post and DHL invest in additional emission reduction measures within their logistics network.

These measures include alternative technologies such as e-vehicles, alternative fuels such as biogas (CNG/LNG), or heat pumps in buildings. This approach is called insetting.

RECEIPT

The emission reduction is allocated to your shipment

These investments result in a measurable reduction of the CO2e emissions as the new measures produce significantly lower emissions compared to conventional technologies or fuels. This reduction is proportionally attributed to your shipment.

This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported using these vehicles or systems that use these fuels or technologies.

Transparency and Trust

  • Insetting is based on the prevailing international standard (guidelines of the Smart Freight Centre Framework).

  • An independent, external auditing company annually reviews the calculation of CO2e data as well as the CO2e reduction achieved through GoGreen Plus*.

  • Online retailers that use GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL receive proof of verified emission reduction in the form of customer certificates.

GoGreen Plus: What measures are we taking to decarbonize?

With GoGreen Plus*, we are making targeted investments in alternative fuels and the infrastructure this transition requires. All of which enables us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions directly within our transport and logistics network.

Biogas trucks (Bio-CNG)

When it comes to pickup and main carriage operations, we use biogas (bio compressed natural gas) as a sustainable alternative to diesel. To support this transition, we are introducing CNG trucks to replace diesel vehicles. To ensure reliable fueling - despite the limited public CNG refueling network - we are also establishing our own gas filling stations.

Bio-liquefied natural gas trucks (Bio-LNG)

For long-distance main carriage routes, particularly between sorting centers, we use bio LNG as a more sustainable alternative to diesel-powered trucks.

Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO100) as a diesel alternative

We use HVO100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil), as a synthetic diesel substitute produced from waste and residual materials such as used cooking oil.

A key advantage is that existing diesel trucks can often be converted to HVO100 with minimal modifications.

Electric trucks powered by renewable energy

We procure electric trucks as a direct replacement for diesel trucks. They are charged with green electricity. To enable efficient operations, we are also expanding the necessary charging infrastructure at our sites.

Electric delivery vehicles powered by renewable energy

Our electric-drive delivery vehicles are charged at delivery depots using renewable electricity. As a result, delivery operations are free from greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e free), unlike diesel-powered delivery vehicles.

Biogas injection into the German natural gas grid (certificates)

We purchase biogas certificates which equate to injecting a defined volume of biogas into the German natural gas grid. Because biogas has a significantly lower carbon intensity than fossil natural gas, this volume is used - as part of a mass balance approach - to replace the energy source used for gas heating in our sorting centers.

Heat pumps in our new delivery buildings

We are equipping our newly built delivery facilities with air-source heat pumps to replace fossil fuels traditionally used for heating. Because these heat pumps are powered by renewable electricity, they enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based heating systems.

Renewable electricity for building operations

Approximately 95% of our electricity consumption is already covered by renewable energy - through power purchase agreements and certificates. This renewable energy powers our electric vehicles, heat pumps and other building operations.

To implement these measures within the GoGreen Plus* service, we follow the framework of the Smart Freight Centre, known as the Mass Balance Methodology (MBM Framework). Based on this framework, the following percentage distribution applied in 2025 to the CO2e emission reductions achieved by the measures used for insetting and GoGreen Plus*:

Prozentuale Verteilung der reduzierten CO2e Emissionen im Jahr 2025. E-Fahrzeuge (LKWs und Zustellfahrzeuge) 56%; CNG-LKWs 19%; Ökostrom für Gebäude 10%; LNG LKWs 8%; HVO-LKWs 5%; Biogas-Zertifikate für deutsches Erdgasnetz 1%; Wärmepumpen an Zustellstützpunkten 1%.

The calculation methodology for all measures relevant to insetting has been reviewed and verified by the external auditor SGS.

Conclusion: Sustainable shipping the easy way

By choosing  GoGreen Plus* from Deutsche Post and DHL, you make a real contribution to environmental protection in Germany. Every order shipped with GoGreen Plus* reduces CO2e emissions by up to 95% - thanks to direct investments in low-emission technologies and processes within Deutsche Post and DHL's German logistics network.

* GoGreen Plus is a value-added service to a Deutsche Post and DHL shipment contributing to decarbonization measures within Deutsche Post and DHL's logistics network. By using alternative fuels and technologies, Deutsche Post and DHL reduces the usage of fossil fuels in the mode of transport and in buildings used for GoGreen Plus shipments. This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported with vehicles or handled via facilities using these fuels or technologies.
